We're a towel company from San Clemente, California, home to world-class surfing and miles of beaches. Sandals are in-fact all-season shoes for us. However, that doesn't mean we don’t jump at the chance to trade balmy beaches for snowy peaks. Here is a list of our five bucket list getaways for the best winter ever.

Whistler, Canada

Nestled in the heart of the breathtaking Coast Mountains, Whistler is a winter wonderland that promises an unforgettable escape. Renowned for its world-class ski resorts, including Whistler Blackcomb, it's a haven for snow enthusiasts. Picture yourself gliding down pristine slopes, surrounded by towering evergreens, with the crisp mountain air filling your lungs. But it's not just about skiing; Whistler offers a myriad of indoor activities too. Explore the charming Whistler Village, indulge in delectable cuisine, or unwind in cozy mountain lodges.

Be sure to check out during the winter in Whistler is the Whistler Blackcomb Fire & Ice Show on Sundays through March. Watch professional skiers & snowboarders perform tricks & jumps while being surrounded by fire.

And something that is year round is the Peak 2 Peak Gondola Experience, where you can take a breathtaking ride on a gondola, connecting Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains as you admire panoramic views of the snow-covered landscapes below.

Swiss Alps, Switzerland

The Swiss Alps epitomize the quintessential winter fairy tale. Majestic peaks, quaint villages, and a sense of tranquility make it an ideal winter getaway. Skiing in iconic resorts like Zermatt or St. Moritz is an obvious choice, but venture beyond the slopes to discover charming Christmas markets and cozy chalets. Embrace the Swiss hospitality and relish in fondue dinners. If the cold gets too much, unwind in luxurious spas or take a scenic train ride through the snow-covered landscapes.

If you are in the area in late January and love to eat, consider visiting the St. Moritz Gourmet Festival. Internationally acclaimed chefs will be showcasing their talents in the Swiss Alps. And for the skiers, there is the Engadin Skimarathon in early March. You can join one of the largest cross-country ski races in the world, attracting participants from all over the world.

Hokkaido, Japan

Japan might already be on everyone’s 2024 travel list, especially Tokyo. But for a unique winter experience, Hokkaido in Japan is a must-visit. Imagine soaking in natural hot springs surrounded by snow-laden landscapes or experiencing the thrill of ice fishing on frozen lakes. Remember to bring your Changing Poncho with you to stay warm after spending time in the hot springs. 

Niseko, a renowned ski destination, boasts powdery snow that's a dream for skiers and snowboarders. Embrace the local culture by trying winter festivals and savoring hot bowls of ramen. From traditional tea ceremonies to snow sculptures, Hokkaido offers a perfect blend of adventure and cultural immersion.

Hokkaido offers a range of accommodations, but booking a cozy ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) is best for an authentic and unique cultural experience.

There are tons of winter festivals in the area, and we recommend checking out the Yuki Matsuri in Asahikawa if you are in the area in February. Check out the massive snow sculptures & ice displays after a day at the hot springs.

Also in early February, the Sapporo Snow Festival is a can’t miss festival. Renowned for its colossal snow sculptures, intricate ice carvings, and luminous light displays, this festival captivates visitors with its magical ambiance. From replicas of iconic landmarks to whimsical characters brought to life in snow and ice, the Sapporo Snow Festival is a testament to the artistry and creativity inspired by Japan's winter landscape.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Rustic charm & unparalleled natural beauty is how we’d sum up Jackson Hole. A gem in the heart of the American West, the Grand Tetons provide a stunning backdrop for winter activities like skiing, snowmobiling, and even dog sledding. The vibrant town square adorned with antler arches exudes a cozy atmosphere, perfect for après-ski gatherings. For a unique twist, take a sleigh ride through the National Elk Refuge or explore the local art scene in Jackson's galleries.

The area also hosts the World Championship Snowmobile Hill Climb in March. These riders take to the steep slopes of Snow King Mountain during this competition.

Lapland, Finland

For an Arctic wonderland escape, Lapland in Finland is a mesmerizing choice that’s not only renowned for its enchanting landscapes but also for a celestial display that will leave you in awe—the Northern Lights. Picture yourself, wrapped in a Puffer Blanket, standing under the vast Arctic sky as vibrant hues dance across the darkness. In Lapland, witnessing the Aurora Borealis is an experience that transcends the ordinary.

Of course, the Polar Lights Festival in January brings in a lot of people to celebrate the Aurora Borealis, but we also recommend taking a guided tour of the Sámi Museum and Nature Centre.

If you are a ski enthusiast, you can participate in the Hetta-Pallas Ski Marathon that takes place in late March. It is a long-distance cross-country ski race that takes place in the wilderness of Lapland.
