Nomadix recently sat down with the creative collective Two Toes to talk over their latest collaboration with Nomadix, the inspiration behind the design, and what's next for Two Toes.
Share a bit about Two Toes: who you are, where you’re from, what you do, your design aesthetic, etc.
We’re Two Toes - a creative studio formed by two best friends! Tala Schlossberg is a Brooklyn-based animator, and Kika MacFarlane is an Idaho-based illustrator. We met in college in British Columbia, and formed an explosively creative friendship right off the bat. In 2022 we started Two Toes to take on creative projects together! Now we create illustrations, animations, graphic design and more for organizations with missions we believe in. Our design aesthetic is very playful, colorful, and bright. We also host creative retreats called Idea Camp for makers of all kinds to come together and reconnect to play in their work.
How did you come up with the concept and design for the Respect Your Mother Collection?
The Respect Your Mother collection is all about doing good for the planet, and ways that an individual can make a difference! We wanted to convey these ideas in a really playful, engaging way. For this design, we were inspired by stickers - how amazing it is that they can contain such powerful messaging in small, contained designs! So we wanted to fill a towel with hand-doodled stickers all about making positive change.
What was the inspiration behind the design? Were there specific themes, colors, or elements that were essential to include to best represent Nomadix’s commitment to the environment?
With the inspiration behind the design being climate stickers, we wanted to work in a lot of different messaging around ways that one person could make a difference! It felt really important for the design to have lots of nature themes, and have a positive, hopeful feeling. We had so much fun writing and drawing all of the messages - the Art is Activism one felt particularly special to include as an artist duo. We love Nomadix’s commitment to the environment, and feel it not only in the products they create but the artists they support and the artwork they put out there!
Which elements or icons were your favorite to design?
I loved drawing the earth with the cute little eyes! I think it’s so fun and playful to put eyes on things, and really brings them to life and makes them a character.
Which product in the collection is your favorite and why?
My favorite is definitely the Original Towel - we have started bringing our Nomadix towels with us on all of our adventures and they are truly incredible! It’s so nice to have a towel that packs small and is light, dries fast, and is the best surface to sprawl out on to draw at the beach or on the river.
What’s next for Two Toes? And where can people follow your work?
This year, we’re working on lots of creative projects and scheming more ways to build a creative community, at Idea Camp and beyond! This fall we’re opening a physical studio in Brooklyn and hope to get to collaborate with lots more artists and brands making an impact.
